The Attribution!!!!
What separates us from the amateurs? The Attribution!!! Historians look first at the author, his/her profession, the date, the publication, etc. When writing your DBQ, it will help you with your point of view statement if you understand the author's background. Example: Mrs. Chapman believes her WHAPPERS are the bee's knees because, as their teacher, she believes her genius has rubbed off on them :)

For example, Han Yu is a leading Confucian Scholar. Makes me wonder if perhaps he feels threatened by the Buddhists...
